Prepare your outing

Practical tips from our houses

Recommended equipment

Good walking shoes, 1.5 L of water per person, energy snacks, a windproof jacket even in summer. Trekking poles are appreciated on steep ascents. Sunscreen and a hat in summer.

Best seasons

Spring and autumn offer special light and quieter trails. In winter, the Vosges take on a snowy face — snowshoeing available right from the house.

Trail markings & maps

The Club Vosgien maintains the trails with a colour-coded marking system (red rectangle, blue triangle, yellow disc…). IGN 1:25,000 maps recommended for longer hikes. Signs are sufficient for family walks.

Back at the house

Our houses have a dedicated room for muddy boots and backpacks. The laundry lets you wash your clothes. The large fitted kitchens make it easy to prepare picnics and convivial evening meals.

Weather and safety

Weather in the Vosges can change quickly, even in summer. Check Météo-France before setting out. Fog on the ridges can reduce visibility to just a few metres. Avoid long loops alone in bad weather and always let someone know your route.

Group hiking

Adapt the pace to the slowest walker and set regular meeting points. Designate a leader and a tail-end person at the start of each outing. Share a common emergency number and bring a participant list — useful for clubs and associations.
